My school is a Title I school in a city in southwest Oklahoma with a population of 100,000 people. About 75% of the students are on free and reduced lunches. They come from low socio-economic backgrounds, and many have never been out of town on a school field trip or family vacation.
A high percentage of our students are from military families.
We also service a high number of special needs students. Because of the widespread background experiences of my students, I would like to level the playing field for them all by bringing these unique, hands-on activities to them.
My Project
Escape Rooms are the new craze - players competing in their own virtual reality games. They are physical adventure games in which players solve puzzles using clues, hints, and strategies to complete the tasks at hand. Players are given a set time limit to unveil the secret plot which is hidden in the room.
Many students at my school may never have the opportunity to experience an actual Escape Room so my intention is to bring the Escape Room to them.
I will preface the quarterly escape activities with literature-based or information skills lessons so they have the necessary background knowledge. I will then use Breakout EDU games provided or create my own custom activities that apply directly to our skills/objectives to bring the game to life.
Who wouldn't be excited to be in on time and in class, anticipating what our adventure holds. Not only will students collaborate and use critical thinking skills, but they will develop life skills as well - learning how to cooperate, communicate, and work as a team.
