Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a science teacher in a low income public school with a student body of 636 students; 98% of which are on free/reduced lunch, and 93% of the students being minority students. These students have limited access to supplies at home and in the classroom as well.
I strive to give my students experiences that relate to their interests and engaged them in learning new content material.
However, this is difficult with limited supplies and being unable to ask students to bring in additional materials for projects but through generous donors I have been able to bring science to life for my students this year and will continue to do so with continued and help I receive by utilizing DonorsChoose!
My Project
These break out kits will be used as instructional technology in my science classroom to not only allow students to engage with their learning in a hands on, active way but to help them develop the 21st century skills that will set them up for success.
My students need to be drawn into the content they are learning, otherwise it is meaningless to them, these break out kits will do just that.
They will draw the students in and hook them. The students will then work together with a team to solve the puzzle and break out. What the students won't realize is how this simple activity will be teaching them to be a team player, communicate effectively, problem solve, and think critically. All of these skills will stay with them beyond school which is why I think this project is so important.
I plan to use these boxes in my class in a variety of ways. I intend to use them to preview new content, review content, and to have students design their own break out game as a way to review the content in a group project during the middle of the unit. Then I will select the most detailed and successful projects to setup in class for a break out room created by students which we will then reflect on how important it is to be detailed in our directions and how that relates to the scientific method.
