My Students
My students are all young scientists beginning to discover the wonders of physics and computer science. We love to explore new concepts and ask questions together. If you came into my classroom you might see us trying to shoot marbles through a "ring of fire" or making transverse waves with gummy bears.
My students are wonderful, curious young people.
They work hard to support each other, and we love to have fun while learning physics and computer science. They are dedicated to their community, and each student at our school commits to performing at least 25 hours of community service each year. Over 70% of students in our district have a first language other than English and nearly 65% are economically disadvantaged. This means our students face barriers to learning physics and computer science far beyond just the difficulty of tackling such challenging subject matter.
My school is a true and supportive community. When you talk to any staff member, student, or parent, you know that everyone cares about the success of the school. No matter what issue a student is facing in the classroom or at home, the faculty and staff are always there to support him or her.
My Project
My students love to solve puzzles and mysteries. One of their favorite lessons this year was solving a murder mystery using kinematics! I want to bring that experience to my students more often.
I see physics problems as puzzles and I want my students to see it that way too.
These materials will allow me to create an escape room type challenge in my classroom. Students will solve a series of circuit puzzles in order to open different locks and finally open a box to reveal a prize. I know this activity will challenge my students to think deeply about physics, develop teamwork skills, build their ability to persevere when faced with difficulties, and see physics problems in a new light.
