My students have a passion for reading. They love to read a variety of books. My classroom has a very interesting range of readers. All of my students have unique home situations that sometimes prevent them from having the materials and resources that sometimes our school cant provide them like new books. I teach in a very tiny community in Salton City. Salton City is a tiny desert city that faces lots of issues. Like a dying lake, poverty, and gang-related activity. Reading is sometimes an escape from reality for my students. Without new and relatable books that my students can connect with, it sometimes impossible for my students to have a break from reality.
Each child in my classroom absolutely loves learning.
We incorporate a variety of learning strategies, group work, and alternative seating and learning options to ensure that each student's needs are met. My students are truly an incredible group, and I am so lucky and thankful for having them in my classroom.
My Project
These materials will truly help my young readers connect with books they love and can't find in our school library. Salton city does not have a library, the closest library for my students is about 30-40 minutes away from them. Having these materials will allow my students to read books they love and can connect with. In addition, these books will allow my students to enhance their fluency and reading comprehension skills. Finally, these books will also allow my students to escape their current reality at home. Most of the families I serve live in poverty and many students come from broken homes.
