Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students at our school come to us from low socioeconomic homes. Some students live with a single parent or grandparents. They are forced to be independent humans while still learning routines themselves as young children. Many of my students are now faced with new challenges, as their homes were damaged during Hurricane Harvey.

Their minds are on things other than what they need to learn at school and sometimes it presents itself as a difficult way to meet students where they are.

They just want to be heard, understood, and feel safe while at school.

I am an ATPE member.

My Project

For this project, I requested award winning books from the Texas Blue Bonnet List for the 2018 - 2019 school year and from a district list for Name That Book Club. I encourage my students to participate in both reading list. They must read 5 of the Blue Bonnet list books to be able to vote on their favorite, and read all the books to participate in the club that competes at a district competition.

The students I teach are learning to love reading as a past time.

These books are available to them at any time, and provide an outlet to relax.
