My students are in sixth through twelfth grade. They are attending an alternative school because they have been unsuccessful in a traditional school setting. Many have been in the judicial system. Several have mental health issues. Also, a number are in the exceptional student program or ESL program.
Virtually, all of our students are one or more grade levels below where they should be.
We have virtually no parental participation, not because the parents don't care, but many work at night or have two or more jobs.
Our students are used to being unsuccessful in school. This is the expectation that I plan to change. Our students are used to receiving leftovers if they get any resources at all. I plan to change this with your help.
I want to bring escape rooms to my STEM classroom with a Breakout EDU kit because they are a truly fun and innovating method of learning.
Escape room challenges can be geared towards any science topic and I plan to use this breakout kit for reviewing previously learned content and skills.
Students will be highly engaged and having fun all while learning. The best of both worlds. I will be able to intertwine STEM and project-based learning.
The ability to create tangible, hands-on STEM projects for students is empowering. Students will be challenged to work together to solve a variety of problems. Each answer will lead them to unlock one of many locks on the box. Once all locks are opened, they can unveil the contents of the mystery box and complete their mission in order to “escape.”
