Eric Carle's Very Hungry Caterpillar Is Bi-Lingual....What?
Help me give my students an opportunity to read award winning books in their native language. LEP (Limited English Proficient) students will benefit from the bilingual text, while role-playing with the characters in the stories.
Our rural farming community elementary school has big expectations for EVERY student EVERY day. We strive to meet, teach and expand ALL students in their elementary education.
Our Limited English Proficient students face each new day with enthusiasm and excitement, arriving early and eager to meet 4 important expectations: to Practice safety, Act responsibly, Work towards success, and Show respect (PAWS).
This enthusiasm is demonstrated in their response to education. Our students WANT TO BE AT SCHOOL and it shows!!!
The current enrollment of our school includes 650+ students, grades Pre-Kindergarten through fifth, with 100% of our student body participating in our state's free lunch program. Although extra resources are sometimes limited, our community works diligently to provide quality educational opportunities for our students of all ethnic and diverse backgrounds. We currently have 20-30 LEP students enrolled.
My Project
With copies of Eric Carle's books, LEP (Limited English Proficient) students will have the opportunity to enhance reading skills. The books are chocked full of reading strategies: sequencing, rhyme, repetition, problem/solution, cause/effect, vocabulary and the list goes on.
Younger students will enjoy hearing and seeing the words in Spanish format, matching them to books of the same titles already in our school library in English format.
Felt figures of "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" crawling through fruits on a felt board will allow all age groups to reenact and retell the stories touching yet another great strategy. Want another activity? Join a different storyteller reading "Brown Bear, Brown Bear" looking for brightly colored animal characters. What a fun way to learn.
The books will be part of our school library allowing parents and students to check them out and share the reading experience.....not to mention the authors unique style and absolutely beautiful artwork. Parents and students reading....yeah!!! A win-win for all.
Believe.... that it is true... "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" is bi-lingual and he wants to share with children of all backgrounds.
