I am a first grade teacher of a gifted class of students whose socioeconomic background consists of an 87% poverty rate, with a predominantly African-American population. It has been my experience that many of the students are not exposed to classic children's literature outside of school, and I have made it a primary goal during the balanced literacy block to immerse them in literature which will inspire them to grow as both readers and writers. While many children are familiar with the book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, few are aware of the multitude of ideas contained in both this classic and others by the same author. Concepts such as number, days of the week, properties of objects, sequencing, and the life cycle are but a few of the many applications for this touch-stone text. The author's approach to presenting these ideas draws the reader in and causes the young child to want to see the book through to the end. It is with a library filled with these kinds of texts that a teacher can reach a population of students with basic skills needed to succeed throughout their academic and social lives. Building a fascination with this writer's style can carry over to the students' writing and love of books in general. In much the same way, the well-loved author, Tomie DePaola, presents a multi-cultural look at the world through a child's eyes. With common experiences shared by children the world over, this author builds upon students' knowledge of the world around them, and their various responses to it. The Art Lesson provides a vivid look into the life of a child in the classroom and teaches a valuable lesson about self-esteem and self-worth. The wealth of ideas shared by both these authors is well-worth examining in an author-study unit, in which students study elements of both authors' styles and the lives of authors themselves in the process, students will be attempting several "try-its" in their own writing to simulate their separate styles, eventually exploring and discovering their own unique styles.
