This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Last year I tutored 8 students who would receive Nooks at the end of 40 hours of tutoring. One student's decoding went up 400%, the lowest was 50%.

I teach in one the lowest income areas in California.

My students suffer from crushing poverty and all the challenges that brings. Literacy is their way out. When I piloted a Nook project last year, students lined up to participate. As mentioned above their fluency improvement was amazing and documented.

My Project

Students will line up for extra reading instruction if they get to use an electronic reader. The results are staggering. Their progress is undeniable. This is also a way I can buy and store books for their use. Most of students do not have access to books at home and get no literacy support at home. I provide tutoring an hour every day.

If you can't read by third grade, you have an 84% chance of not graduating from high school.

California bases how many prison beds they will need on this year's 3rd grade reading scores. Literacy is life! Literacy is the only way these students can escape a life of poverty.
