eReaders= Engaging & Exciting Example of Excellent Reading!
My students need wo eReaders such as LeapPads to provide interactive, technology-infused listening centers to enhance reading skills and comprehension.
Excited about reading? My students are excited to read and LOVE technology, but many lack the ability to read interesting books independently. Having the technology available in our classroom would not only provide an example of fluent reading but would build confidence with technology.
My 25 first-graders are incredibly diverse.
The biggest struggle I face is reaching the students at their current ability level and making sure each one is challenged appropriately. With 25 students ranging from 3rd grade reading ability to the students who are still mastering letter-sound relationships this can be a tall order. My students are ethnically and socio-economically just as diverse.
Despite our differences, our class shares a love for learning. We get excited about fancy words, famous scientists and learning about our world. We practice giving back to our community by planting trees and helping others. We are readers, writers, mathematicians and engineers that solve problems and continually strive for improvement. We believe that we can achieve great things to make a difference.
My Project
eReaders like the LeapPad will provide students the opportunity to engage in independent reading and listen to fluent reading. Based on ability, students can choose to either listen to fluent reading, select only the challenging words to be read aloud or read the book independently. These options enable students to challenge themselves no matter where they are as a reader. LeapPads are a fun and engaging ways to help foster a love for reading. Studies show that the more students are engaged in reading the better they perform academically.
The two LeapPads will be used in my classroom during literacy centers. We use The Daily 5 which lets students choose the order of 5 daily centers: read-to-self, read-to-someone, listen to reading, work on writing or word work. Currently, our only opportunity to listen to reading is a single cd player and a handful of books on cd. With the added LeapPads, students will be able to listen to reading and engage in fun games to strengthen reading skills.
This project is so important to our class because our high student-to-teacher ratio makes it difficult to read independently with each student every day.
Expanding our opportunity to expose students to fluent reading enables them to develop reading skills and independent study habits when the teacher is working with other students.
