My students are hardworking, amazing kids. They have an enormous heart, especially for those hurting or struggling. They come from low-income homes with barely the necessities but they are willing to share what little they have with each other. This kindhearted nature is reflected and valued in their homes, which may not include both parents. Much of this was experienced first hand as I continue with distance learning and glimpse into their home lives.
Many of my students desire to learn online, especially during the closure of the school.
Although Choice Board packets are created by each teacher and the school prints/mails them weekly, understanding and completing the items depend heavily on the student's limited reading abilities. 76% speak another language at home and 91% read 2-4 years below their grade level. Data like these make us a Title I school with free breakfast and lunch provided to all during the school closure.
My Project
My students desperately need eReaders to enhance home learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Students at home can still seek the adventures in books and dream about other places and people.
As with many low income families, materials like eReaders are rarely available to use at home.
Arrangements with Spectrum provides wifi however equipment like eReaders are needed to tap into the literacy adventures that books provide. This project enables the students to learn further.
With one eReader in a household, many children can open up to the world of books!
