This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My school is located in an extremely under-resourced community in the south side of Chicago--Englewood. My students are highly motivated and extremely resilient. They are young adults working to develop themselves into well-rounded, resilient, and sincere humans as members of society. We are a selective enrollment high school that provides rigorous academics, amazing extracurricular opportunities, and a safe space for all learners. While our students need to test in to come here, many of our students come from all across the city to have a shot at a great education. Our students are 98 percent black and over 60 percent of our student body qualifies for free or reduced lunch.
The students that I serve are highly motivated and ready to learn, but do not always have the resources they need when they come in the door every morning.
Because we are so serious about our academics, we do our very best to make sure--no matter the socio-economic background of the student--that everyone has an equal shot at a great education.
My Project
My AP Microeconomics students spend a lot of time learning to draw graphs. Often, this means drawing and erasing on regular paper. Though this works, it usually leaves the students with a mess and 20 different versions of a graph!
The markers and white boards will allow all of my students the opportunity to practice their graphs and cost curves over and over again.
This will not only help them with their understanding of how graphs work, but it will allow them the opportunity to manipulate graphs and talk about outcomes after shifts. Learning will become easier for both the teacher and the student!
