Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

As diverse students with disabilities that live in communities that are plagued with violence, poverty, and stereotypes, it is imperative that students learn to have positive mindsets and value their abilities.
My students are energetic and fun inner-city high school students. My students have a range of disabilities including learning disabilities, visual impairments, autism and intellectual disabilities. A majority of them are also English Language Learners. My students show greater enthusiasm when learning is interactive, interesting and includes social-emotional learning.
My school is located in a large, urban city. Of our 3,100 students, 94% are low-income, 10% of the students have disabilities, and 8% are English Language Learners. More than 75% of my particular students are low-income, have disabilities and/or are English Language Learners. I teach my students not to let their personal home situations, English Language Learner status or disabilities hinder their goals or academic and social-emotional growth.
My Project
By attending the Equity-Centered Design Thinking and Innovative Mindsets conference, I will have the opportunity to attend a variety of sessions that focus on creating a safe, creative and positive classroom environment and curriculum for my students with disabilities. As a special education teacher, I am responsible for supporting students in reaching their full potential; I believe this conference will better enable me to do so.
This conference will benefit my students as it is so important for them to gain confidence as they deal with every day obstacles due to their disabilities, ELL status, community violence and/or low-income status, among general teen stresses.
Unfortunately, many students feel that they are products of their environment. As most of my students face inequities, it is imperative that they learn how to work towards fiscal responsibility as they transition to the real world. This conference will allow me to learn strategies and curriculum that I will then be able to incorporate into my lessons to benefit student growth.
