Equity in Remote Learning for all Students

Help me give my students an iPad to provide equity in remote instruction. When we use Microsoft Teams during remote learning, I need a second device to support my English Language Learners and students with special education services.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are intelligent, hardworking, and resilient students from Washington, DC who are doing their best to learn as much as possible during this pandemic. Bancroft Elementary is a bilingual school from pre-K to 5th grade, where students learn in Spanish for half of their school day and English for the other half of their day. In our math and science classes, we learn everything in Spanish, working towards our goal of being bilingual and celebrating the home language of many of our students' families. We work hard to equip ourselves with the skills we need to be critical thinkers, problem-solvers and social change agents who can change the future of our city and our community.

My Project

Learning and teaching online during the global pandemic has not been easy! My students have faced the challenges of technology, internet connectivity, being apart from their teachers and classmates, and sitting in front of their screens for 5 hours a day with tenacity and positivity. They are accomplishing amazing things while we are in virtual learning. We will be remote through the end of January and we are asking for support in the form of an ipad to continue to improve my students' virtual learning experience.

Many of my students are English Language Learners or students with special education needs and they could benefit from more individualized support during independent work times.

Unfortunately, when we are on Microsoft Teams for our live virtual classes, I'm not able to conference with these students individually. An ipad would help provide me a second device that I can use to monitor my students during virtual learning and create a second virtual classroom where I could call small groups to provide individualized support while still monitoring the rest of my class that is working independently. This would allow me to better meet the diverse needs of my students and provide a more supportive learning environment.

Additionally, as a math teacher, modeling different mathematical strategies during virtual learning has been a challenge! The versatility of the ipad would provide me the ability to write on the screen and produce more well-organized, handwritten notes for my students through the use of a stylus on the touch screen.

Upon returning to school, I hope to put the ipad to good use in my classroom as a device that can be used to implement a positive classroom behavior point system.
