My Students
My 1st grade students are students who are full of wonder. They are leaders, readers, writers, mathematicians, scientists, and overall scholars. Our students, just like many have been learning from home since March. They are excited and anxious about the upcoming school year as some will be in the classroom, and others working remotely. I want to provide all students, no matter where they are with the same high quality lessons and experiences.
Our school is an amazing school located in the Bronx, NY.
We are a hands-on learning community, focusing on student-centered, culturally and community responsive teaching. Our leaders (students) are engaged in integrated/ project-based learning, where they get the chance to express themselves not just academically, but through various leadership roles in our school.
My Project
My first graders, just like others this past year, had their Kindergarten year interrupted. Despite the quick transition to remote learning, and the switch to an untraditional way of learning my students and their families persevered. Although we made it through the end of the school year, I want to ensure this school year begins with the creation of a class community, and engaging, high-quality lessons. As many of my students will still be learning from home, I want to make sure they receive all the foundational skills and high quality instruction they would have received had we been in person.
In a normal situation I would be able to sit side by side, or walk to my student's seats to help them and guide them as they learn and practice new skills.
Now with our "new normal" of remote learning, I am no longer able to do so. The requested items allow me to still engage with my students, creating a class community. They will also allow me to create and deliver engaging live and recorded lessons, as well as detailed demonstrations for my students. Use of different lenses for my cell phone will allow me to zoom in and out to show different perspectives of material being presented to my students. Lighting and a microphone ensure all students can see and hear me during lessons. A document camera, as well as the use of a dry erase easel will allow me to demonstrate skills, and provide my students a clear view of what I am presenting.
As many of my students and their families are feeling anxious about what this year will bring; I want to do all I can to ease this anxiety by giving all students a true classroom experience from home!
