Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The majority of my students come from low-income, predominantly minority Spanish-speaking families, and 100% of my student population qualifies for free or reduced lunch.
The community in which my students live is one of the hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Many of our families are struggling financially due to changes in employment and are unable to provide additional materials to support STEM learning at home. My students are eager and excited to learn about the world around them and why things work the way they do. There is already an underrepresentation of minorities and economically disadvantaged populations in the STEM fields. The current crisis only serves to widen the disparity of future STEM opportunities for my students. Donations to this project would allow for equitable STEM learning opportunities by providing hands-on materials that would otherwise be inaccessible to my students.
My Project
Help provide my students with the materials needed to conduct hands-on STEM activities while distance learning. These materials will help 210 students engage in safe, high-quality lessons while at home.
Students will utilize the materials to explore electrical engineering, physical and chemical changes, and the properties of matter.
Students will use a variety of litmus strips to evaluate acids and bases and their interactions. They will collect and analyze data using the scientific process.
Providing students with copper tape, wire and nails will allow students to experiment with electrical conductivity and circuitry.
