Have you ever wished you could go back and rehear exactly how someone explained a difficult topic/problem and see the work they did to get the answer?
I have students that are in college preparatory and non-college preparatory courses in Chemistry and Biology.
Our school is a comprehensive, public high school in a suburban area. My students vary a great deal in their skill sets, ranging from highly advanced to very low. Some of my students are in special day classes or receive a great deal of academic support in the form of Resource.
My Project
I am requesting a Livescribe pen and a document camera for use in my classroom. The Livescribe pen offers a unique ability to record the audio of my lessons in conjunction with the notes that are written with the pen. These notes are easily transferred into a viewable document that has audio that can be accessed on any computer (does not require special software). This will allow students to go back and experience a lesson as many times as they need to and on their own time. This also opens up a great opportunity for students who are absent.
I am also asking for a document camera to project the work written on the Livescribe notebook paper. This will complete the system so that sample problems and explanations can be integrated into the classroom and made available in their complete form outside of the classroom as well.
This project will provide a great educational benefit to my students with learning disabilities who often do not capture all of the information in a classroom setting.
For example, a student who is easily distracted may be able to go back and listen to the explanation that they missed. This will 'even the playing field' for my students.
Further, all students have the occasional need to rehear and review a lesson. This system will allow a repeat of the full experience.
