Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My first-grade students are pretty amazing. Each with their unique needs, minds, potential, and story, my students all love to learn. My first graders are very excited to solve problems(and make them).
My 27 scholars are loud, confident, happy learners full of curiosity.
We grew into a trusting classroom with mutual respect. Sadly, our time together in the classroom has been cut short.
My Project
As we confront these challenges raised by COVID-19, we can try to provide equity in a situation that we know is not fair. The district is sending out devices to its highest-need students so that they can participate in online learning opportunities. However, the district has over 25,000 students and more than half do not have computers. In other words, there will inevitably be students left without technology in a time when they need it most. The district will effectively need to choose which students will be left behind in a time where it is imperative that no student is left out to dry. Unfortunately, I cannot provide those devices myself; otherwise, I would. That is where I need your help.
If students have tablets to use for remote learning, eight students will not be left behind and each will have the learning experience that they deserve.
For my students, I am using educational applications such as Khan Academy, Readworks, Epic Books, Benchmark literacy, Happy Numbers, i-Ready and Sumdog to design differentiated instructional activities to meet their needs. My students will be able to complete activities at their own pace and I will be able to track their progress and provide 1-on-1 support where my students need it the most.
I have also requested notebooks, pencils, scissors, dry erase boards, and dry erase markers for my students to use during live lessons.
