My students need welding safety helmets. There currently are more students in the class than there are helmets, and some of the helmets that we have are held together with duct tape.
Our school is a small, rural school in a high-poverty area. Agriculture and the agriculture program is very important, but sometimes this program can be expensive and therefore struggles to provide basic expendable equipment. The Instruction that I provide will hopefully provide a lifetime of knowledge and good habits.
These students are wonderful, excited young men and women, many of whom come from troubled families and we try to use their education as one way to give them a leg up and help them to do better than their parents did.
My Project
This project will provide a class set of 10 auto-darkening welding helmets for use in our shop. We teach welding in Agricultural Mechanics and in Introduction to Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources. This will allow me to get rid of some of the broken helmets, and allow the students to have newer. better safety equipment to wear and use.
The habits that students learn in school are the habits they bring with them for life, having new, up to date safety equipment will show my students that safety is valued in the classroom, and then they will value safety outside of school.
Training students in safe practices is one of the most important lessons that we teach, and it is essential to have the appropriate equipment.
