My students are dedicated, hard working students, who have found the love of a craft that engages not only their time, but their desires to do a great job. I have students who don't have confidence or for whom, academics are not their strongest suit, but have found comfort, and a place in my broadcast class. These kids have found a passion, and in that found in themselves something they didn't know they could achieve.
For many of my students, this is the only place they can go to feel like they belong. They display leadership, time management, resourcefulness, and learn real world skills that most classes can not teach them. They spend their own time before school, during lunch, and after school because that is how much they want to be apart of this class and to see their projects come to life.
My students are learning real-world skills in my class. They are learning time management, personal responsibility, how to write scripts, develop a news segment, create a show, and accept constructive criticism. In addition, they are learning about technology: computers, editing software, lighting, audio, cameras, and soundboards. They are also learning to decipher truth and how to bring news to the world, and give a voice to the voiceless. Regardless of where they go to school or what they major in, they can carry these valuable skills and adapt them to whatever it is they pursue.
In Their Own Words
We are part of our school's broadcasting team and everyone that is in our group is extremely serious about pursuing a career in journalism, broadcasting, or even filmography. We make news shows each week for our school and would greatly appreciate these cameras, if we could get them. Accomplishing our segments and getting experience in what we'd like to do would be very beneficial with this equipment. We get no funding for this class and we have to work to raise money for new equipment.
Along with our teacher, we will utilize these cameras to assist us with creating a quality newscast, public service announcements, and other segments. Our teacher allows us access and opportunity to all equipment. He gives us creative license to use the equipment as we choose so we can bring our ideas to life. Our club's needs are not going to be achieved in one big step. We will need help, funds and support. With that we can make our dreams a reality.
This equipment will help us to produce shows for our school, allowing for better communication and informing the students of our school about a wide range of things from: community events, sports, and school events. This helps us create a sense of community as well as connectivity to the life outside of our classrooms. The problem is our limited resources which makes it difficult to produce a quality product. Additional equipment puts us one step closer to a more efficient class.
