Many students have spent the last year or more with minimal opportunities for social interactions outside of their family circle. This has been made abundantly clear by how much my students have been struggling with their problem-solving skills and positive interactions this school year. My district is still observing social distancing in the classroom, meaning I can't have students engage in play centers where we typically develop their social skills.
If we can't play together inside, why not take ourselves outside to engage in purposeful play where we can practice positive ways to engage and problem solves with each other.
My plan going forward is to do an SEL lesson daily in the classroom that provides a focus skill for our playtime. We will then go outside (for what would have been our center's time) to play together and practice the skills just taught. This project seeks to create a collection of equipment that encourages students to play together that we can house in our classroom. Having our own equipment will make transitioning between our classroom and the playground easier and ensure that the equipment is the appropriate size for my young students.
