Help me give my students the equipment needed to grow as female athletes and increase skill levels. Our current practice balls are all starting to unravel and have more and more trouble holding air.
Despite the adversity and poverty facing so many of our kids, they come to school every day with a remarkable perseverance and resourcefulness.
HFHS is an ethnically diverse urban population with 60% on free and reduced lunch, 10% homeless population, with a rigorous International Baccalaureate (IB) program.
Though they have many endearing qualities, they have the unfortunate luck of being born into a system that also lacks adequate funding and resources which can then perpetuate a cycle of poverty. Their stories will move you, anger you, sadden you, and hopefully motivate you to make a difference in their life. Make a difference by providing them with the resources that many schools across this country take for granted and sometimes even throw away!
My Project
Having quality equipment is imperative when coaching any sport. This isn't just because of the technical benefits, but it also touches on the social and emotional needs of young athletes in high poverty areas.
When they have the quality tools needed to be successful, players feel valued and optimistic about their ability to succeed in the sport.
The majority of our high school varsity team (we don't have enough players for a JV) team is made up of first-time soccer players. They didn't have the privilege to take part in youth sports programs and really only have had access to high-quality sports coaching now in high school. Sadly, our program lacks funds for new equipment. Having functioning and up to date equipment will go a long way to help these young female athletes build confidence and skill as a team.
