My students attend a Title I elementary school. They are hardworking and very enthusiastic. They are from diverse backgrounds and add to the culture of our school. They face many challenges daily.
"The whole purpose of education is to turn mirrors into windows." -Sydney Harris.
My students have turned windows into doors. They break through barriers not many other students face. They made 20% gains on our state end-of-course exam. If they have the tools to be successful, they can be. They want a level playing field in the classroom.
My Project
These supplies are much needed not only by the students in my class, but by other teachers and students at my school. I am department chair and I mentor new teachers, so I am always lending a hand.
Our students often come to school empty handed, so we as teachers need to have the supplies needed for them to be successful.
We have a large population of ESOL and ESE students who need to create visual representations to increase understanding of content in the classroom. The dry erase markers are used on whiteboards and the permanent markers are used to make posters. These posters are displayed throughout our campus to support our learning and to help with review. For our low level readers it is imperative that they highlight and annotate text for understanding. The highlighters encourage our students to interact with our text to increase understanding.
I also advise many new teachers who started the school year late and do not have the resources needed to get their classrooms up and running. It is wonderful to be able to support my colleagues with the extras they need to have an active and collaborative classroom.
Applying for grants and rounding up supplies can be time consuming so I offer to help them get the supplies their students need to prepare for our state tests.
