In my Third Grade classroom this year I have 17 very curious boys and 10 smart girls. A classroom of eager learners.
It might surprise the average person that our school is a Title 1 school, as we live in a quaint small town, but the fact is my class has quite a few students who come from struggling families.
Many of our families live paycheck to paycheck, receive assistance such as free lunch, or live with grandparents to make ends meet. This does not stop my students from being curious and avid learners.
Third grade is also the first year students are asked to take the Smarter Balance State Test. This is a big deal for these little guys. A time to shine and show off everything they have learned.
Chromebooks in the classroom would give my students equal time to work on their Smarter Balance skills. The students will have ample time to practice without them knowing they are practicing testing skills.
The computers will allow access to the students to type their final drafts, have students who have motor skill issues use text to speech to help with their writing and do research during Reading and Writing Workshop time.
Being a Title 1 school this "evens the playing field". Having more access to computers allows a sense of fairness for my students to be compared to other students within our own district.
