Equal Opportunities: TI-30X IIS Calculators for ALL Students
My students need Texas Instruments(R) TI-30X IIS Solar Scientific Calculators in order to interact with the curriculum in the same ways that they do in class.
My students come from communities that span across 26 miles of coastline. As such a diverse group, the math program at my school provides students from all communities an opportunity to build a sage learning environment for learning mathematics.
More than one third of middle schoolers at my school struggle with mathematics; over 50 percent meet federal poverty guidelines.
Research shows that students with low socioeconomic status often struggle from higher rates of failure and low self confidence. The ability to not afford basic math tools, such as calculators that are the same as the ones used in class not only poses the threat of embarrassment. It also puts such students at a disadvantage when not being able to use common tools outside of the classroom. Providing access to the same calculators used in class would benefit students that cannot afford such basic tools. Such access would be the pivotal point of contributing to the success of each student.
My Project
TI-30X IIS Solar Scientific Calculators will allow all students in my class to have access to the same tools and resources as their grade level peers. In our Algebra I math classes, TI-30X IIS Solar Scientific Calculators are used to model instruction in solving equations and finding solutions. This is significant because there are specific ways to solve math problems that students can not do on another calculator. This type of calculator keeps a record of student entries and allows students to review numbers and operations that were entered.
Funding TI-30X IIS Calculators for our class will provide equal access to math resources and tools for all students.
Given low socioeconomic status of most of my students in a math workshop class, having such access is critical to student success in math. Learning to use a calculator that is available to borrow in class but is not available in our workshop class or after school greatly hinders the progress and learning of students beyond the classroom. Being able to have access to the same calculator used in a studentʻs math class is critical in supporting the education and well being of students who simply do not have the means to buy or borrow such a tool from family or friends. Your support will provide this access to each and every student that is able to use these calculators beyond their scheduled math classes. Having the same resources and tools within a math workshop exponentially boost student success in math.
