Our district is in a small town. We have incredible support of our community and parents, but resources are not always readily available.
I am responsible for 55 students in social studies and literacy, and 45 students for speech communication.
Our school has a wonderful school climate and a very diverse population of students, including students from the Lummi Nation. We have free and reduced-price lunch rate of 42.2%. We also house a Life Skills program, as well as a Behavior program in our building.
My Project
I try to introduce good literature to my students every opportunity I get. They love when I can read aloud because for the students that struggle with reading, that is their one opportunity to hear a great book, one that they cannot read independently.
For students who cannot read independently, hearing a story can influence their love of learning.
As I've been adding books to my classroom library, I've been focusing on adding books with matching CDs which allows the students to read along with the story on their own. There is power in independently choosing your book and reading along.
