When you think of a rural school, you probably picture our students. They wear hats, drive trucks, and say yes ma'am. They also don't get out much - few of our students visit outside of the county for anything other than sports. They are great kids who have very little exposure to the outside world. Our community is like an island - if we do not bring it in, it won't be available to us.
Bringing the world to my students is very important to me!
As a small campus, we have a small budget. We do not have a lot of technology or even a football team (in Texas!) What we do have are students who are eager to learn and experience all that the world has to offer. As the future leaders of our community, these kids need to be exposed to diverse viewpoints and new life experiences.
My Project
Working in groups, my students will research different mythologies from around the world. Each group will present their research in a vivid presentation to the class. Our school library is small and does not have sources for our project. We will study information literacy before we begin, so my students should be looking for solid, scholarly sources of information.
Because so many of the world myths are the basis for American and European literature, my students need solid background knowledge in order to make connections and understand allusions.
Exposing my students to the requested scholarly works, such as Great Mythologies of the World, and Mythology Encyclopedias will expose them to ideas from all over the world. They will use physical texts as sources for MLA citation and gain exposure to non-fiction text features. I need your help to get my students out of the habit of taking the first hit on Google and trusting that it has relevant information.
