EOY Blowout Celebration of Literacy and Ultimate Class Auction

My Project

All year, my huge class of 32 fourth graders has been striving towards excellence in literacy and basic financial literacy skills. All year, students have been earning class points (class dollars) that they will be able to use at our end-of-year auction. I am pleased to say that all 32 kids are literate now. We are continuously improving reading speeds.

I have tied this point system into a yearlong lesson on budgeting and making smart choices financially.

Sometimes kids are offered small prizes or treats on which they can spend points, but they are also reminded that a 30-point tiny bag of chips or candy may not be worth it if they could later spend 100 points on a much better prize.

Thinking back to my own youth, the thing I remember most vividly was the class auction my 6th-grade teacher set up for our class. I want to do this for my fourth graders, so they can experience it as well. We are hoping to add books and treats to the rewards.

We already have a handful of rather large/expensive prizes graciously donated to the class auction, but there are 32 kids. When I asked about items, books were a popular choice. The auction coincides with our EOY celebration, so the drinks and a few of the snacks/candies will used be in that capacity.

To be clear, we will have a class auction regardless of if this project is funded. It will just be far better, with a better selection and more items available should we get funded. As of now, there are approximately eight large items available and perhaps a dozen or so mediocre items. I am hoping to be able to offer everyone the ability to have something they would want to buy. These kids deserve it.
