We are a project-based school where students collaborate together to problem solve and create project outcomes that are relevant to the real world. We have a very diverse student population with students coming from very different walks of life. At any given time you will find students building, researching, or presenting. You will always find students at the center of the learning and the learning will most often be hands-on.
Our school is a publicly funded charter embracing a philosophy of learning through community-based projects, which are conducted as collaborations between different subject areas.
Our students are admitted through a lottery to create a population representing the diverse county - including a range of socioeconomic classes, learning levels and military families, that we are part of. We work hard to level the playing field and make sure that all students have equal access to opportunity.
We have a number of afterschool programs aimed at giving students access to learning experiences that they may not have access to during a normal school day.
My Project
Next semester we are planning to have students learn about environmental systems in the San Diego region. The goal of the project is to understand how environmental systems work and how individual organisms (and their wellbeing) are integral to environmental conditions. Another goal of our project is to teach students how to better use power tools including welding. During our semester long project students will be researching how humans have impacted our local ecology and seeking solutions.
We are in need of a MIG welder, an angle grinder, extension cords and an air hose to for our project next semester.
We will be using these tools to weld the frames for observation shelters and a truck camper shell. The goal in building these structures is ultimately to get our students outside and actually have them camp with the shelter and camper shell. It is certainly an ambitious project but we are excited about connecting students to their natural surroundings and having students work with their hands and collaborate to make incredible and relevant products. The learning experience is sure to be rich.
