I teach in a rural school in northeastern Connecticut. My students are amazing! They come to school will brilliant ideas, and are often passionate about putting them into practice. They love to take what we are learning and apply it to the real world. Throughout the day, I ask my students to take on different roles: computer scientists, authors, explorers, astronauts- even environmental scientists!
My students love any type of project that allows them to practice their learning in a real-world way.
Our school is a project-based learning school, which means that students get to apply their learning to real-world projects. The ideas they come up with are amazing and it's wonderful to watch them contribute to their world.
My Project
This year, my students have been studying hummingbirds. We have learned all about what they eat, where they sleep- we have even written a book about them! Students have been doing a lot of research both on their own and asking questions and skyping with to a National Geographic Explorer, Anusha Shakar, who studies hummingbirds.
The more they researched, the more concerned they grew about how deforestation was impacting hummingbirds.
They want to build a hummingbird garden so that we can give our local hummingbirds a home and learn more about them. However, in order to attract hummingbirds to our area and make our hummingbird garden a reality, we need a variety of hummingbird feeders and hummingbird friendly plants.
Our hummingbird garden will give my students the change to put a wide variety of environmental science skills into practice and allow them to take action to protect our local hummingbird population.
