All of our third graders are eager learners who need and thrive with hands-on and creative learning experiences. I teach at an urban, Title I school with limited resources. For most students in our school, they have little opportunity to participate in hands-on, project-based learning outside of school, so I want to bring this exciting project experience right into their classroom.
This project will bring an educator from Audubon New York for three in-class workshops and out into nature for one field trip to a local park!
I want our students to learn about their own urban community, New York City, gain awareness of their environment, and apply the knowledge gained in the classroom to a hands-on creative experience that integrates math and science teaching and concepts.
My Project
My project will bring Audubon New York's "For the Birds!" program directly to my students and help us to explore our neighborhood, while also bringing students directly to the birds. The program teaches environmental awareness and a love of nature through the study of birds, focusing on native birds and how they thrive in their NYC habitat. Like my past third-graders, I want to get my current students excited about learning through hands-on experience and discovery of the natural habitat that exists right in their own neighborhood.
Through this 4-week program, the students will develop a deeper knowledge and appreciation for the environment, science and the birds native to our community.
They will have the opportunity to make hypotheses, observe their surroundings, collect data and develop their own conclusions. They will ask questions and seek answers - and their worlds will open to new possibilities and ideas. They will gain a sense of pride in their community and in themselves. By the end of the program, they will have an incredible start to their education and their love of learning, as they become scientists, writers and even educators themselves.
