My students need lab kits to help investigate environmental science in Chicago! I am requesting kits that help illustrate concepts in water, ecology and weather.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Investigation is one of the words that best describes my classroom! We are constantly doing lab work that requires us to ask complicated questions and often leaves us with an understanding of the concepts as well as lively discussion and debate of contentious topics.
My students that would use these materials are juniors and seniors in AP Environmental Science and Environmental Science courses.
They are a mixed group of interest and ability, but tend to do well in investigating and articulating environmental issues. They are interested in lab investigations, researching and presenting on environmental science and can make strong cross-curricular connections from their background in other science courses and social science courses.
My school is a selective enrollment school in Chicago, we have a significant population of free and reduced lunch students, however our students see incredible success at our school. Nearly all students move on to college when they graduate and this past year's seniors were awarded over $40 million in scholarship dollars.
My Project
My students will use the lab supplies to aid them in investigating the environment. In our atmosphere and water unit, they will use the Coriolis Effect kit to gain a stronger understanding of wind patterns that can often seem confusing. They will also use the Water Treatment kit to supplement our learning of water treatment processes.
These kits will allow for more sophisticated investigations in my classroom.
Without resources such as this, I am often limited to labs that only involve items I can cheaply buy at Target or the dollar store. This will allow students to investigate on a deeper level.
