My Students

I love my students because they are weird and curious, and way more tolerant of weirdness and curiosity than kids were at my age. They seek out literature that I mention in class—often having to negotiate with their peers who get to pilfer our small library's scarce resources first—and return with questions about what they have read.

My Project

My students are far more aware of the environment, and the environment's influence on everything from culture, economics, and politics, than students of the past. To satisfy their curiosity, I have over time incorporated far more environmental history into my curriculum. In doing so, I have often wanted to turn with them to Aldo Leopold's classic work to provide poetic descriptions of ecosystems and examples of how ecological change can act as much as any human as an agent of change. With a classroom set of "A Sand County Almanac," I can finally send copies of the book home.
