Environmental Buttons for Earth Day

My students need button-making materials to celebrate Earth Day with pins they designed on their own.

My Students

Environmental concerns are big. They can be hard to connect with when we are young. I wore an "e" (for the environment) pin on my purse as a young middle and high school student. I'd like my students to feel like they can make a difference as well.

I work at a public school in Utah.

We have a high concentration of special education because of how the district serves that population. The area is somewhat rural, but is becoming more of a city. There is a variety of economic levels since some farmers are still in the area, but there are more and more neighborhoods.

My Project

Through Donor's Choose we just got a button-making machine. It came with the materials to make 100 buttons. We really appreciate that one grade level could make Earth Day buttons. We'd like to see the whole school participate and design their own Earth Day buttons. They could focus on water in 4th grade, air in 6th, recycling in 3rd, and so on. The kids will be interested in seeing what the other grades focused on.

The button I wore as a youth still affects my thinking today - nearly 45 years later.

I was proud to have people ask me about my "e" button, and happy to explain the importance of the environment. I'm taking an on-line class this term about the environment. I hope that some of the kids will be as excited to share their ideas about the Earth and celebrate Earth Day with their vision of how to better live in this world.
