Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are hard-working, bright, young individuals. They attend school each and every day, ready to learn, and meet all high expectations. My students love challenges and face difficulties each and every day with smiles on their faces.
My students come from a Title I school with a high population of English learners.
Most come from low-income households and have limited resources and experiences. For many of my students, their only chance of life-enriching activities is at school. They love school, and I want to make this place the most enriching place for them!
My Project
Financial Literacy is an important skill that I do not think we teach our students enough of. Rather than teaching individual lessons though, I want my students to understand making money through a financial literacy project!
With the right materials and software, my students will become designers and true entrepreneurs in this financial literacy based, project based learning environment!
I will ask the groups of students to design a patch or shield that represent our school that can be embroidered using our embroidery machine. This can range from our school logo or motto. Anything is possible! Then students can turn their hand drawn designs into a digitalized version using the StitchArtist software requested to upload for the embroidery machine.
Where does the financial literacy part come in? During each step, if each group meets a deadline or due date, they will have a chance to earn "classroom cash." As students earn enough classroom cash, groups can then pay for materials to create their designs to sell to their classmates! The group with the best voted design will also be awarded real money prize to actually reproduce to produce, market, and sell their products to the entire school! This will give them a real sense of the competitive market, along with comprehension of budgeting their money, resources, and time; a true concrete understanding of financial independence and perhaps a peek into a future in financial entrepreneurship!
