The school I teach at is designed to support students with significant mental health needs. We provide extensive mental health services throughout the school day to help them be successful. We support them in learning the self-regulation and peer interaction skills that are necessary for them to be successful in their home districts.
Despite their significant mental health needs, they are still very inquisitive and eager to learn especially when material is presented in an engaging manner.
They love hands-on opportunities.
My Project
My students will be beginning a unit on insects in Minnesota in the spring. I will be inviting speakers from our community to discuss the importance that insects play in agriculture and in the environment as a whole. I will also be having the students collect their own samples of insects to study. The students need additional field guides and materials so that they can learn more about our local insects and their role in our ecosystem.
Having my students both collect their own insect samples, hear from guest speakers and having them have access to field guides to learn about their samples will allow them to become budding entomologists.
My students require these hands on opportunities to be engaged in science instruction. These materials will help make this a memorable unit for our students.
