Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are blossoming into enthusiastic readers! They are no longer learning to read; they are reading to learn. They are thinking at a higher level and using their imagination. I am so blessed to witness such a transition!
Our school is a low income school in the high desert that is filled with eager readers.
For most of my students, this classroom is the only place that they feel safe and have the stability that every child deserves. I know that through our read alouds and independent reading, doors to their imagination are opening brightly.
My Project
In addition to replenishing some of my students favorite books, the Readers Theater materials will improve fluency and accuracy for ALL students while reading aloud. Presenting dramatic interpretations of plays will incorporate the arts while improving pacing, intonation and expression.
I have purchased all the books in my classroom with my own money and the students have literally read them until they are falling apart and taped together but many are missing pages.
It is frustrating for a child to invest a lot of time in a book only to realize pages are missing. It is an exciting day when I bring a new book to the classroom. I literally have to hold a raffle to determine who gets to read the book first.
