Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school's motto is "Children Come First." This means that we strive to meet our students needs academically, socially, physically, and mentally. This is especially important to students here because we are a Title I school where over 90 percent of the students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Several students at our school view school as an escape from their broken home and age-inappropriate responsibilities. At our school, students can finally just be children. I believe it to be my job to transform escape into opportunity. I want my student to view education as their ticket out of poverty.
I serve 3 blocks of 23 students which is 69 students daily.
The majority of my students are English Language Learners. The population of my class consists of a majority Hispanic, followed by African American, and with a sprinkle of Asian American. I try to meet the needs of all my students by differentiating my lessons to include visuals, movement, and audio. All my students learn differently so it is imperative to me that build relationships with my students so decrease misbehavior and incorporate their interests in my lessons.
My Project
My goal as an educator is to make sure my students come to school excited to learn and grow. For the 1 school year that I have my students, I want to instill the enthusiasm for learning that will stay with them for their whole life. This is why I have requested games, party activities, etc. I like to incorporate games and relay races with my lessons to make learning active and still effective. These materials will help aid my students to be successful academically and hopefully leave an impact on their lives and the feeling of happiness and fun is associated with learning.
Science has a lot of unfamiliar and new vocabulary so I would use charades, Pictionary, guess who, and the playing cards to review vocabulary.
I would incorporate vocabulary words with these familiar games to help with comprehension and practice using unfamiliar words. For example, pictures of vocabulary words will be used for the guess who game since science is a very visual subject. Additionally, I would use the gamie bucket, ping pong ball, carnival combo, beach ball, and the washer toss to create a relay race where students would work with a team to answer task card and complete different activities on the way. This combines academics and action-based learning and it is proven that students learn better when they are active and moving around.
