Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 6th grade mathematics at M.S. 223, The Laboratory School of Finance and Technology. Our school is a new school housed in what was the worst school in NYC. Before we moved in there were serious gang problems and a shooting outside of the school. Over 95% of our students receive free lunches indicating their dire poverty.
One of the most serious impediments to our students' learning is the absence of books in their lives. Most of the students cannot afford books and only have access to the books in our homerooms. Our school does not have a place for a library and we don't have the funding for one even if there was a free classroom. Our students need books to read.
I have spent time asking them what kind of books they are interested in. I have purchased some of the books on my own at library book sales and from stores. However, even with my purchases our students have only a minimal selection to choose from.
Our students have so much promise but to convert their hardwork into success they need the resources to succeed. We desperately need your help to purchase books that will get students excited about reading and help them learn how to become better readers and writers. Thank your for your wonderful support.
