Can you imagine being a student 13 years into the new millennium, yet stuck with classroom computers that are over 10 years old?
Our school is a Title 1 school, and most of our students have no computers at home.
As my students head to the computers in my classroom to type their beautiful poems, English essays or work on our colorful online-yearbook, I hear the familiar call, "Ms. Roth, the computer's frozen! The mouse won't move!" "Patience," I counsel, all the while silently pulling my hair out with frustration.
Even with one new computer, we can practically move mountains! Our 10 year old computers are so slow and glitchy, we practically weep with frustration at trying to get anything done, even as we do our best to incorporate technology in the classroom. One inexpensive, yet super smooth working and practical laptop will allow more productivity among my 35 students per period than the 10 old clunker computers we have now.
If we intend to prepare our students for the future, they need to practice on the computer, use the Internet, and be able to use the multitude of programs available to them online.
