My Students

Do you remember the book that took you outside the classroom? My language arts class is based on the philosophy that reading is the key to everything in life. I want to inspire my students to read as much as possible, and through books that intrigue them, I believe I can accomplish this.

My students come from a rural town in North Carolina.

The community is tight-knit, however we live in a working class environment which leave most students needing basic supplies, including paper and pencil. My students work hard and are deserving of any materials they receive.

My Project

In my class, while reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, we will learn that our actions have good and bad consequences through House Points, learn that what we have should not be taken for granted, learn a new language made up by J.K Rowling and learn about Fantasy novels. My goal is to make them fall in love with the book, which will in turn, make them life-long readers. We will build comprehension, vocabulary and stamina while reading this novel.

This book will probably be the first fantasy most of these students read, so it will be the first step in opening their minds to other genres.

Through the generosity of others, we will be able to have a nice classroom set of these novels that will last for many years.
