My students need reading material such as leveled readers, games, language practice, and a Common Core Exemplar Text Library to help grow reading comprehension and fluency.
"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go."-Dr. Seuss This quote encompasses the true meaning of reading. I want to create a classroom where my students have the opportunity to read multiple types of literature and information.
My students are hardworking, love to learn, and are preparing to be 21st Century learners.
Our school is a Title I school, which means over 50% of students qualify for free and reduced lunch. This also indicates many of my students do not have the necessary reading materials to help their reading comprehension or fluency, but are held to the same expectations as any other child.
My students are fortunate enough to have access to some books in the classroom to help support their reading. However, this is not enough. I want to be able to provide more so students are able to have access to more knowledge and material they can take home. These fourth graders are excited about reading and literacy activities. I want to continue to feed in to that by providing as many literacy activities as possible.
My Project
I am requesting a plethora of reading material, such as leveled readers, rigorous text, and literacy activities to help create a better classroom environment. All materials will be located in the classroom library and accessible for all students. I envision my students using the area and these literacy materials to better their understanding of the Common Core and sharpen their literacy skills to help them become better readers who are able to comprehend, read fluently, and make the transition from learning to read, to reading to learn.
They will become responsible for their learning and assess themselves on the skills they need to attend to. Through the use of the leveled readers and Common Core materials, students will be able to accelerate the growth needed to be made. I will also be able to start sending home leveled readers and various activities to help practice the skills they are lacking. These resources will help allow the student to feel confident and excited about reading.
This project will provide opportunities for my students.
These resources will light a fire in my students by not only encouraging them to read, but by showing them they are cared about and taken care of. It will allow 21st Century skills to be practiced and experienced, such as leadership. Students will have ownership over our classroom through responsibility. They will be on their way to becoming 21st Century scholars.
