Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My seventh grade students - or as I refer to them as "my kids"- are funny, curious, and insightful leaders. Something happens or someone says something daily that truly brings joy into the room. I cannot imagine a better place to be a learner...and I am talking about me! They teach me something new all the time!
I believe that "Readers are leaders”; therefore, I want to continue to connect each student with a book that ignites their passion for reading!
Physically opening a book, turning the page, smelling ink on paper, and being transported to another place and time...that is a human experience that no tech or tablet can replace. While some kids are already avid readers when they walk in the door, my goal is for every child to become one. After last year’s DC addition to the classroom library, I know that we are on the right path! I can't wait to see them discuss, analyze, and ponder the big ideas (and details that develop them) and watch their fire for reading ignite!
My Project
My students are top notch! They come to me with high test scores and excellent grades from elementary school. My challenge is to take 150 12-13 year olds, teach them standards-based and enriched material using technology daily. I love it! While I create most of the curriculum myself, last year I started using CHOICES magazine. It was fantastic! I made a terrific unit called “What Does It Mean to be Healthy?” The kids said it was their favorite of the year because they had relevant, up-to-date reading material and lots of choice. This year I’d like to continue the enrichment with ART magazine. We don’t have a full-fledged Art program, so it is crucial to me that I expose students in any way I can. These two magazines will be a fantastic experience for all of us!
