My 7th grade students are from a rural area in Louisiana. They are inquisitive and curious about the world, most of which they have not experienced. I am teaching them creative writing, art and music. There is not much opportunity for cultural experiences in our area. Some of them have never even been to any type of theater until they go with our school, and that includes movie theaters. They have such an interest in seeing what the world is like beyond the small area that most of them have had the opportunity to visit.
When exposed to a wide range of cultural experiences such as Broadway musicals, famous works of art, and famed poets and writers, they become proud of how educated they feel and proud that they know about topics that are not normally discussed in their social circles.
Our school is a 100% free lunch school. Most of my students cannot afford the school supplies on their class lists, much less money for items like Scholastic magazine subscriptions. My wish for them is that they feel like they are part of the world and have the knowledge to be well spoken citizens.
My Project
A subscription to Scholastic Art magazines will enrich my students' knowledge and experiences with art. It will place beautiful photos of famous works of art in their hands. As of now, I choose what to expose them to in art class. Having this resource as a guide with many more ideas and print plus digital formats will be a wonderful addition to our classroom. These magazines have many resources and activities that are used for studying fine arts along with project ideas.
My students' knowledge of fine arts will be greatly increased as well as their eyes being opened to the artist within themselves.
I have used Scholastic magazines in the past and find them to be one of the best resources in my 30 years of teaching!
