Mr. Clements from Pontiac MI is requesting technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need a projector, document camera, and a reliable pencil sharpener. These items would significantly enhance the learning that takes place in my classroom.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
If we were able to obtain newer technology and a reliable pencil sharpener in our classroom, I would be able to apply multiple learning strategies, and simultaneously too. I want to provide as many opportunities for engaged learning as I can for my students. Technology truly makes this possible.
My students are a part of a Title 1 funding program.
At least 90 percent of my students come from high-poverty homes. Although our resources for learning are very much outdated and limited, the desire to learn and explore is truly there. The smiles that I encounter on a daily basis and their eagerness to learn is what motivates me to teach the best that I can each and every day. With some new technology, there's no doubt in my mind that these children will not only grin to their ears, but also dig even deeper into learning than they already do. In 4th grade, there is only one classroom computer that the kids are able to use. That's about a 90 to 1 ratio for children who are hungry to learn. We also have only overhead projectors that are outdated and are seemingly incompatible with the content these kids need to learn today. I want to build the best classroom environment as possible so that it may compete (and beat) the environment in which they live their daily lives.
With a document camera and overhead projector, I will be able to teach to all students. My classroom is about 20 percent of Hispanic descent, some of whom can't speak English at all. With these technology gains, I'll be able to efficiently present visuals that enhance learning. As for those students who sit in the back row, they will now be able to fully see what it is that I'm explaining and trying to convey. New technology will boost engagement in all subject areas, especially in math and in writing. I will be able to fully guide my students in the steps it takes to achieve mastery in content areas. Multiplication strategies and writing techniques will now be able to be seen clearly and in a way that can be understood. As for the pencil sharpener, I've wasted countless pencils with our current pencil sharpener. I found the one I'm using now in the vacant classroom next to me. This is something small that in fact makes a strong impact in the classroom.
Your generosity in donations will go so much further than just 4th grade.
My goal is to promote the desire of success. This is a small step that makes my goal a reality. College is the ultimate plan. Technology is overwhelming in today's society. With your help, these 4th grade students will not only succeed in my classroom, but in the years to come.
