Enrich Math with Literature

My Students

Think back to when you were in 3rd grade. Your math classes were whole group lessons. Your teacher would stand at the board and teach the math lesson and then you would sit in your desk and complete math problems in a workbook or on a worksheet. This is not my classroom.

I teach in an urban k-8 magnet school.

My students are gifted students, but since I teach at a magnet school, most people assume that my students do not need any extra resources to make them successful students. But as classrooms change from a teacher-centered class into a more well-rounded student-centered class where my students can choose from multiple resources in order to understand math concepts independently. I teach students that struggle with math but love reading. I would like to incorporate math literature in my math centers in order to reach these students. By adding these resources to my classroom, I hope that I can make my math lessons more fun!

My Project

My students need math literature that correlates with our current math standards. In my classroom, I try to incorporate literature into all disciplines. In the past, I never had enough math books to cover all of my math standards so it has been hard. I would like to add this to my daily math lessons. I believe in Guided Math, where I play a supporting role in their learning. The students are placed in ability level groups and taught the standards of the curriculum. Differentiation is achieved as students are in different groups and instruction is changed to hit the needs of the student. By adding literature, It will become one of their choice activities along with technology, games, small group instruction, problems solving, and skill and drill activities.

By receiving these donations for my class, I can incorporate literature across the board in my classroom.

With the added math literature books to my classroom and my math centers, I feel like I will have the opportunity to reach my lower-level math students in a new way and enrich my upper-level students as well.
