Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students attend an urban school in a high poverty area of Chicago. They have access to limited resources at school and at home. My students are hard-working and very motivated. They are bilingual students that value the opportunity to work with high-quality resources.
Students would benefit from having access to class sets of chapter books.
They express enthusiasm and gratitude when provided with additional resources that are granted through DonorsChoose.org. They truly appreciate the generosity of donors.
Our school is committed to supporting our students and our community.
My Project
Students will engage in fluency and comprehension activities. They will summarize the chapters and discuss the figurative language of each chapter. They will learn and discuss themes of the books. They will work on activities that reinforce comprehension skills such as plot elements, cause/effect, inference, and drawing conclusions. They will work on Venn diagram activities to review character traits. They will work on writing assignments.
Students can develop their fluency and comprehension skills.
The students will also review history through literature. They will learn about the Chicago Fire. They will enjoy a culminating field trip to Chicago at the end of the school year.
