My Students

Too often our learning of a language is restricted in classrooms with reading, listening, speaking and writing practices. Students in my Mandarin classes get 55 mins a day, 4 days a week, to practice their Mandarin either with me or with their classmates in school. But as an old saying in Chinese states, "read a thousand books, travel a thousand miles." It is of equal importance to give my students an opportunity to experience Chinese culture and practice their language skills in real life.

Most of my students come from low-income families, and they didn't have the chance to learn Mandarin until high school.

As "late starters,” they are very talented, and enthusiastic in the language. They are interested in Chinese culture and Asian cultures, but they've got no chance to experience them in life.

My Project

Learning a language cannot be separated from experiencing the culture in real life. I would love to help my students get as many opportunities as possible to step out of the classroom and get in touch with people from the target culture and interact with them in the target language!

During this trip, my students will have the chance to learn Chinese culture in the local China Culture Center, tour San Francisco Chinatown with a guide, and also practice their language skills with people!

This trip will not only serve as a cultural trip for my students. During this trip, they will have tasks such as Chinese words scavenger hunt, shopping and bargaining in Mandarin and much more! They will also record a reflection of their trip and shopping in Mandarin! Your donation and support will empower my students to learn the language in a deeper way!
