I need to attend the 2019 Corwin Press Literacy and Equity Institute so that I can attend various workshops and break-out sessions and learn more about literacy, equity in the classroom and teacher clarity.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our middle school is a diverse, high-needs school of about 1,400 sixth, seventh, and eighth-grade students. Almost half of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Our hallways are filled with great diversity and I strive to bring this diversity into my ENL (English as a New Language) classroom and my curriculum.
My ELLs (English Language Learners) are motivated, intelligent and compassionate individuals who are excited about learning.
They are active learners who appreciate the opportunities they are given. They are hungry to learn English and I work extremely hard to provide them with the skills and knowledge they need to be successful in the classroom, and in life.
My Project
I was so excited to learn about this conference. What grabbed my attention first was the fact that many of the speakers are experts in the field of literacy instruction and also authors of many educational books that I've read over the years. I am an ENL (English as a New Language) and I am constantly reading and learning the latest research that I can bring back to my classroom. Some of the speakers/authors include Douglas Fisher, Colleen Cruz, Margarita Calderon and Nancy Frey. These individuals are my heroes and learning directly from them will be a dream come true! My students will benefit from my attendance at the conference because I know I will bring back motivating strategies, materials and vocabulary games that will help them improve their literacy.
This conference will teach me how to improve my literacy instruction, while at the same time learning new strategies to ensure that my lessons, and my instruction, is well-organized, linked to New York state ELA standards, and effective.
I plan on flying JetBlue to California and staying at the US Grant, which is also the venue for the conference. I am also requesting several educational books that Corwin Press recommends that conference attendees read prior to attending the conference. The authors of these books will be speaking at the conference, so reading the books ahead of the conference will only increase what I get out of this conference.
Thank you for taking the time to read this project.
