Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In the middle of the school year last year, I became a teacher to approximately 120 students. Before I became their teacher, many of my students had only used the calculators on their cell phones, specifically, their iPhones. When I asked why they had not been using regular calculators, many of them said they simply did not know how or just did not like using what was in the room. I also realized that because there were 3 different types of calculators it became an impossible teaching nightmare to show students how to use them. This was extremely discouraging for some of my students and limited some of their abilities to be successful in the classroom.
My Project
Having access to quality materials not only allows students to make small achievements in the classroom, but it will foster more growth and learning as time goes on. My students will be using these calculators daily to make calculations such as: finding the cosine of an angle or finding the square roots of transcendental numbers. Additionally, they will also use them for testing and for group activities that are based on CPM curriculum. This will not only help them solidify their classroom experience but it will allow them to access more complex problems and equations with the proper supports and materials. Hence, it is important that I have a classroom set of approximately 30 calculators so that all of my students can have equal access.
